The Institute for Security Studies seeks to expand knowledge in a number of fields associated with homeland security using the expertise and educational resources available at UNLV. The Institute partners with government agencies and private entities to spearhead research, conduct training, and devise practical and cost-effective solutions to problems in the areas of security, disaster preparedness, and combating terrorism. Working hand-in-hand with UNLV’s academic departments, the ISS supports graduate-level education as well as security-related training with the goal of providing excellent professional development opportunities for those in the field of emergency management.

International Financial Terrorism Center at the
University of Nevada Las Vegas

This paper serves to stimulate discussion concerning the creation of a university-led center on International Financial Terrorism, a center which may assist in the protection of critical infrastructure and those who are either the recipients or investigators of financial terrorism. This paper addresses current viewpoints, strategies, policies and procedures, and regulatory agency perspectives when dealing with this global issue.
Unfortunately there appears to be no widely known agency or school, public or private, which has attempted to tackle the issues surrounding international financial terrorism from the global perspective or even from the perspective of national protection. The government appears to be a leading source of information, but the benefits of their work are not widely shared with the private sector. Government agencies investigate and prosecute financial crimes, but little has been done to educate businesses and individuals to the pitfalls of international financial scams and schemes, regardless if criminal or terrorism based, other than postings on various websites.
