About Us
Vision, Mission, Guidance
Vision
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ Institute for Security Studies will be a widely known, responsibly managed, highly respected organization that helps position UNLV as a nationally recognized source of excellent research, training, studies, and education in the fields of homeland security and combating terrorism.
Mission
Our mission is composed of three complementary and interlocking elements. They include the following:
Defining Requirements
The ISS will sense and share through effective and frequent communications those requirements emanating from the policy, RDT&E, and operational communities that comprise our Nation’s homeland security and combating terrorism enterprise. We will develop a common operational picture that will enable UNLV in general to have enhanced awareness of the needs and opportunities which allow the university to make a difference.
Promoting Capabilities
The ISS will develop and sustain a comprehensive understanding of UNLV capabilities and will communicate effectively with sponsors and stakeholders the full breadth and depth of our intellectual capital.
Providing Innovative Solutions
The ISS will produce innovative solutions that:
-
Solve security- and terrorism-related problems in practical and cost-effective ways
-
Create and offer training relevant to the needs of practitioners
-
Assist UNLV’s formal academic initiatives
-
Expand the body of knowledge
To accomplish these three elements of our mission, the ISS will draw upon the applied research, technology development, consulting, product delivery, outreach, and educational capabilities available throughout UNLV and from other sources.
