ISS Takes Nevada’s 7 Signs of Terrorism DVD to Washoe County
Reno, August 21, 2008—UNLV’s Institute for Security Studies (ISS) delivered the Nevada “Seven Signs of Terrorism” DVD to a crowd of more than 150 Federal, state and local public safety and Homeland Security officials; representatives from the Washoe County Local Emergency Planning Commission and the Northern Nevada Counter-Terrorism Center; private sector security officials; community members; and local press.
At the rollout, Washoe County Sheriff Mike Haley introduced ISS Executive Director Scott Smith, Chair of the Nevada Commission on Homeland Security Dr. Dale Carrison, the Director of Homeland Security Rick Eaton, and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Lieutenant Tom Monahan. After brief remarks and a viewing of the DVD, multiple copies were handed out to attendees for further distribution.
The DVD, which contains both an English and a Spanish version, is being distributed to groups in Nevada that are believed to be those most likely to be in a position to observe the signs of a potential terrorism plot. Those groups include workers in the fields of general security, public school security, airport security, transit (including cab drivers), and hospitality (particular those employed in public areas of hotels).
The ISS, in support of the Nevada Governor’s Commission on Homeland Security and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, coordinated the production of the training DVD aimed at providing a concise terrorism awareness message. The DVD, which serves the entire state of Nevada, illustrates the “Seven Signs of Terrorism” and explains how to report such signs. The “Seven Signs of Terrorism” are:
-Surveillance
-Information Gathering
-Testing Security
-Planning
-Suspicious Behavior
-Rehearsal
-Getting Into Position
According to the DVD, if a potential terrorist act is interrupted during any of the “Seven Signs” the planned act can be stopped. Ordinary citizens reporting suspicious activities they have witnessed is an important tool for law enforcement working to stop terrorist acts. Viewers of the DVD are encouraged to call 1-877-828-8386, the number for the Southern Nevada Counter-Terrorism Center, to report any of the “Seven Signs of Terrorism.”
