ISS and College of Engineering Forum a Success

UNLV’s Institute for Security Studies and the Howard R. Hughes College of Engineering recently sponsored the fifth in a series of security forums. Titled “Protecting America: A Forum on Earthquake Preparedness,” the event was held on Thursday, May 29, from 3:30 to 6 p.m. in the UNLV Foundations Building.

The forum began with a “Shaker Table” demonstration by the College of Engineering’s Stacey Fish. The “Shaker Table” uses a scale model home and vibrations to illustrate the motion caused by an earthquake and the subsequent damage to an average home’s interior. After the brief demonstration, the main feature of the event began with the showing of the award winning film “The Damnedest, Finest Ruins” by James Dalessandro. The film, which depicts the devastating effects of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, was viewed by more than 50 audience members and opened the door to a discussion of community disaster preparedness.

Following the demonstration and film, College of Engineering’s Dean Eric Sandgren welcomed guests and panelists. Scott Smith, Executive Director of the ISS, moderated the panel session, which featured Dr. Jim O’Brien of Clark County Emergency Management, Chief Jon C. Klassen of the Clark County Fire Department, Lieutenant Steve Menger of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, Dr. Aly Said of the College of Engineering, and Mr. Dalessandro, Producer of the documentary.

A lively conversation ensued, including open discussion by the panel members of the preparedness of Clark County and Las Vegas in the event of a natural disaster. Panelists were in agreement that effective plans are in place to handle some levels of natural disasters in the area, however they emphasized the importance of community involvement and preparedness. Suggestions for community members included participation in neighborhood watch efforts, having a neighborhood and household plan in place, and preparing an emergency supply kit at home. One weakness in disaster preparedness cited as an issue nationally and locally is the shortage of vital staff, such as nurses and paramedics.

Several community members asked thoughtful questions of the panelists. Among those audience members who participated were Mary Mason of Senator Ensign’s staff, Tom Cutler of the Beasley Broadcast Group, Robbie Keeley of Southern Nevada Area Health Education Center, and Betty Hanseen of UNLV President David B. Ashley’s office.
